Take it Slow and Enjoy the Music

Recently, I had a rare time to just sit and enjoy a cup of coffee by the window. The world was silent. My thoughts were racing, thinking about everything and nothing. All of a sudden, I wondered why its too quite. Then I realized that I havent been listening to music anymore. The radio at home has been quite for the longest time. When life was not as busy as it is now, when I was single and left to hound by myself, I used to live and breath music. Im not a musician ha,just had to clear that up. I just love listening to music all the time. Our home used to tremble from the loud songs blasting from the speakers. No complains from dad since he loved my playlist. When Im out, headphones were permanently plugged into my ears. I bought a CDman with my first salary. My room was littered with CDs of Alanis Morrissette. Rivermaya and Eraserheads, anyone?

What happened? Why did the songs stopped? Why did it became too silent? Well, life happened that's why. I was too busy creating a new home for my young family that I forgot how to enjoy an ordinary day. Life got too hectic that I would go through the day in a rush.
Always running, always in a hurry.
If I stop as to take a breath, I'll get left behind.I'll get smashed by the competition.
Smell the flowers? Hear the birds sing? Who has the time?
Life is a rat race after all. Or so I thought.

Today, I realized that Im too tired of all the rushing and running. I am close to burning out. Just like my favorite book, Not Quite Burned Out But Crispy Around the Edges, I felt like I am about to give up. I love my job, you know. Yes, I do. It brings me satisfaction and fulfillment, not just for the financial gratification but for my contributions in the society. I am happy when Im teaching, but the pressure is slowly mounting, leaving me grasping in the edge for sweet sanity. Dont you just love a life that is uncomplicated and less stressful? Its not easy to achieve but I really want that. I really do.

I want to take my time, enjoy nature, hug Zay while she still lets me, kiss Hubby and cuddle up, live a simple life, enjoy my coffee in the morning without scalding myself , eat breakfast in a garden, run in the fields, feel the wind in my hair, walk in the beach and feel the sand between my toes. I would love to dance in the rain, have an herb garden, cook great dinners, invite friends over. And of course, listen and take pleasure in music again.
Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, Philippines

Maybe, I can do this. Maybe I can enjoy what life has to offer. Maybe I can start by taking it slow and playing my favorite song, right now.

My Water Baby at Spring View Resort

Do all kids love the water or is it just my little girl? Zay just loves swimming! I remember on her 2nd birthday, we held it by the pool in a hotel. It was raining.  A storm was brewing the whole day. But nothing could stop her from taking a dip. All the other kids were in the shade but she was enjoying the water so much, she would cry when I attempted to get her out. Keber sa bagyo! Of course, I was with her all the time. I was shivering but I gotta keep up with her energy. So yun, fever galore after the party.

Last weekend, when I said we were going to attend her cousin’s 7th birthday, she was ecstatic! Pool partey! She was so excited she couldn’t finish her breakfast. She kept bugging us to hurry up and get going. She was jumping up and down, too excited to be still. That’s why we arrived early in the venue, even ahead of the birthday celebrant.

The party was held at Spring View Resort, Jasaan Misamis Oriental. It was about 40 minutes away from Cagayan de Oro. It was a good enough place, not too expensive. Just perfect for family outings. It has three Olympic size pools, a kiddie pool, a slide and a bunch of cottages sprinkled around. For only Php40 as entrance fee, you can enjoy all their amenities. Cottage rentals range from Php800-3000 depending on the size. Affordable, ayt?

As soon as we got there, my water baby changed into her swimsuit. With her cousins, she was dipping in the pool from 11am till 4pm. She just got out for lunch and some snacks. All the kids were in the pool the whole time, goofing around, sliding and riding on the backs of the kuyas.

The loves of my life
Are they having a great time or are they having a great time?

While quivering after a long day in the water, she said, " Mom, when I grow I will be sooo rich that I will build a swimming pool bigger than this."

Magdilang-anghel ka sana,anak. :)

Love Notes and Other Cheesy Things

Mommies, are you a breakfast eater? Sadly, Im not. A cup of coffee is good enough for me. I'll just have a sandwich at 10am and Im good to go. But since my little one is going to school na, Ive got to be awake at an  unholy hour to prepare her meal.

On Zay's first day in school, I was a zombie as I prepared her lunch and snacks. As I said in my previous post,it was a struggle. But I made it! I am so proud of myself. clap!clap! clap! I prep her lunchbox with a little extra something.
snacks: Alaska choco milk, cookies, 2 sandwiches, water
lunch: rice, meatballs

Did you see that little note? Yes, I put that inside her lunchbox. Im just cheesy like that. :)
At lunch, we ate together. When she arrived at my classroom, she hugged me tight. She said that she saw my note, thanked and kissed me and sat on my lap the whole time.

Next day, we were awake early too. As I was busy cooking in the kitchen, she was writing in the living room. I didnt mind it because its usual for her to be busy writing at any hour. Then, we went to school. At my school, when I was rummaging through my bag for something, I saw this sheet of paper inside. And what I saw was a note from Zay:

                                                I love you Ma!
Zay (with 3 hearts after her name)

I was holding back tears of joy, the reason why I forgot to take a picture of that note. Yes, I have my hands full of a sweet, thoughtful, little girl.

Isnt it great to be a mom?
To all kid-less ladies out there, this is what you have been missing. :)

Her First Day in School

Hi mommies!

I know, this is a very late post. My girl's first day in school was last week pa. :) Busy-busyhan lang ang peg ko. LOL.

Anyways, let me tell you up front that Im a night owl. Like Im alive and kicking at night and would sleep at 2 or 3am, even on a work night. You may wonder at my crazy sleeping pattern. Well, its because my classes starts at 12 noon. Yes, mga mommies, uso yan sa public schools. Two classes are held in one classroom, one in the morning, another in the afternoon. The perennial problem of classroom shortage. Well, Im not going to rants about the shortcomings of our education system here. Im just explaining my crazy "night life". :)
So, yun na nga. I dont need to wake up early in the morning for work. Plus, when my girl is in kindergarten, she was with my mom. We dont have a yaya because of previous bad experiences thats why my mom was the one taking care of her. My mom slept with Zay and took her to school. O diba, ang gaan lang ng life ko dati. No hassle, kasi I know my Zay is in good hands.
Now, here comes the new school year.  Hubby and I decided that The Girl should be with us na. She is bigger na kasi. We think we can manage na even without a nanny. I want my mom to enjoy her retirement in peace, too.

Thats why I have to wake up early na. *insert drumroll here*
It was a struggle! My hubby was teasing me the whole morning. He knew how hard it was for me. I was half awake when I cooked breakfast. Making Zay eat her cereals was a battle too. She took a looong time to finish. *sigh*
But the day was memorable. Its her first day in grade school! She was so grown up as I watch her line up for the flag ceremony, introduced herself in class and made friends during recess time. She is a big girl now.I couldnt stop her from growing up. :( Might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

The stage mom so excitedly asked her at the end of the day, " So, how was school?"
She answered, " Its okay." and shrugged off her hair like first day in school is not a big deal at all. :)

I Miss You,Pang

This weekend, my sisters and I are home.
Imagine the scene. The house is noisy with laughter. Mom is cooking in the kitchen with us around the table, waiting for the food. The stereo is blasting with great music. The house is a mess. Everybody's having a great time. That is the scene here since last night. Only, someone is missing. Dad.

My dad, Papang to us, passed away 8 years ago. Quite a few years have passed but we still miss him everyday. He was 48 when he had kidney disease. He was sick for a month. The doctors told us to prepare for the worst. We thought we were. We were wrong.

Memories of him still brought tears to my eyes.I miss  his dinuguan and humba, the best Ive ever tasted. I miss how we ate karekare at his favorite resto, how we watched movies  and ate popcorn and polvoron, how he wanted only the best for us.

I have regrets ,too. I want to do more for papang. I have dreamed of travelling with him. Of him walking me to the altar on my wedding day.Of him seeing his granddaughter. He would have loved and spoiled  Zay, I knew he would. I regret I didnt asked for that dinuguan recipe. Even my chef husband cant equal that dinuguan. Yes, I wish he is still with us. We miss him so much it hurts.

Somewhere, I know he is watching, maybe even joining the fun.
I know he knows we love him.
I know in my heart that when I say "Happy father's day!", he is listening, happy that his wife and his daughters are doing well.

Things Im Grateful for

Its a rather busy week. A lot happened not only in my life but in our family. It was a week for the books. But despite of it all, there are still a lot of things to be grateful for.

First, a baby is always a blessing. Yes, we are expecting a baby! Bad news, its not mine.:) I wish its mine. Still, the family is thankful. A big YES for Zay's playmate. Cant tell you more about it. Its not my story to tell.;)

Another thing.Last night, we went home to my mom's house. It was fun! The family was complete. My sisters were home too. We cooked and ate a lot, as was always the case when we're together. There was a lot of laughter. I knew from mom's face that she was happy. Its a rare occasion when all's together. Thank God for family!
Camwhoring: 3 sisterettes and cousins, Wing and PJ

Then my Tita Pat is home from New York! We missed her. She'll be here for a month. Great times! And I have some pasalubong!!! Thanks tita!

Yummy for the tummy
Yummy for the face
Benefit mascara, Benefit blush on, MAC mineralized skin finish, MAC eyeshadow, Clarins lip balm.

Thank God for a happy week! Tomorrow is Father's day. Zay and I are planning a surprise for the padre de familia. Cant wait!

Hope your having a great weekend, too.

Daddy's Girl

This is hubby and our baby girl. Yes, I know. Magkamukha sila. They look so alike that when Im with them, I feel like an outsider. Notice the eyes. Both have Chinese-looking (or Korean, basta singkit, hehe!) eyes that seem to vanish when they smile. They have the same build, on the skinny side while I am a little plump.:) They are fair-skinned, Im one or two shades darker. Their mannerisms are even the same.Whenever we're together, I look like the yaya (hahaha!)or maybe a family friend. I just dont look like my daughter.

" Kanino ba nagmana  si Zay?". That's the usual question of people who havent met my husband. Once they see the two together, everything falls into place. "Ah, sa daddy pala!"

Have you heard about some elders saying that when the child takes after the father, it only means mommy is the one more in love with him? Ganon? Well......But Dad, you love me first. Ikaw ang unang hahabol-habol sa akin.Remember?

But if you ask hubby, the similarities end in the physical. According to him, Zay's attitude is all me.
Short-tempered? Me.
Spoiled? Me.
Crybaby? All me.
Witty? Yours truly. Smart? Ako.
Pretty? Ako!Ako na! Ako na lahat! Yup, she all got it from me.LOL.

But one thing's for sure, my dear hubby. Im glad you are her dad.

The 45 and the Teacher

I am tired and desperately wanting some rest. But here I am, writing away, knowing that this is my kind of therapy, knowing that I wouldnt be able to sleep anyway without blogging about my busy week.
Yes, busy days are here again. The school year has started and teachers like me is on to a hectic start. Frenzied was my last 4 days.

Last March, I felt not quite burned out but close to it. The previous school year has not been too kind to me. What with the latest ( and the biggest) change in the Philippine education system named K to 12, teachers have undergone some major training and seminars that left me exhausted to the core. But after the summer vacation, my energy and enthusiasm has been renewed and I am raring to go. My passion for teaching has been revived and I cant wait to get going.

And so comes the first day of school. For most public schools, it was chaotic! Thousands of students flocked to the schools. When I say its almost a stampede, Im not exaggerating. It was noisy and hot and frantic but it didnt dampen my good mood. I was in high spirits! I was just so excited to meet my new set of Grade One kids. And indeed, it was quite a challenging set.

I have 45 kids in my class. Aging from 6 to 8 years old, I am faced with a wide variety of individuals. The moment they entered the room, I knew my whole nine yards of patience will be tested extensively.

Let me tell you about some of them. About 95% of them dont know yet how to read. There are at least 5 who still dont know how to write their names. About half of them needs to practice writing. I can now pinpoint those who needs my attention more because they can be so unruly and noisy. I have this kid who cried and shouted and almost broke my eardrums the moment he lost sight of his mother.
This is my jammed classroom, home of 45 kids with a million different intelligences.

But at the end of the day, as I wait for sleep, I smiled to myself as I remember this group of girls that says, "Your so pretty, Teacher!" every 10 minutes. And this kid who sheepishly came to asked for me to open his lunchbox and thank me like it was the best thing that ever happened to him.  And the way they sang their hearts out and danced and turned around and jumped. And the merry shouts of " Goodbye, Teacher!" as they excitedly scramble to the door.

Yes, I am tired and drained. I am a weary traveller at the end of the day but its amazing how I still wake up the next day refreshed, looking forward to going to school.

Yes, teaching can be a pretty exhausting job but when I see these kids eagerly raise their hands, wanting to answer when I ask questions, when I see them show their moms the artwork they have done for the day, when I checked their papers and stamped a smiley face on it, I beam to myself knowing that I have chosen the best profession in the world.
